The final page of the book—the one Lan has been too afraid to turn to—is now open. It shows Lan on all fours, black centipedes crawling out of her mouth. Binh is beside her, his eyes hollow.
Lan freezes. Because it’s true—she has been angry. After Minh died, she used to scream at Binh for crying too loud, for spilling fish sauce, for just being there . She once locked him in the storage closet for an hour. She’s never hit him, but she’s wanted to. The thought disgusts her.
