Xia hesitated. "Last Dollar."

In this very laundromat, twenty-three years ago, a woman named Xia—your mother—sat in this same chair at 2 AM, washing a baby’s blanket. She was terrified. She didn't know if she could be a good mother. She pushed a button from her coat through a hole in the wall—a hole that was patched long ago, before this brass plate was installed. And I told her a story. A story about a little girl who would grow up to press a brass plate in the same spot, and who would finally understand that her mother’s silence wasn’t coldness.
