The metadata tells a clinical story. The first 76 pictures were taken in frantic bursts between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM. Image 580 was taken seven hours later, at 10:51 AM on April 9th.

The night of April 8, 2014, was moonless and absolute over the cloud forests of Panama. Somewhere along the serrated spine of the Continental Divide, two young Dutch women—Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers—were already dead, or dying.
