Jung und Frei (German for "Young and Free") was a prominent weekly youth magazine published in West Germany from the early 1950s until its closure in 1984. It occupied a unique and influential space in the post-war media landscape, standing apart from both the politically engaged press and the burgeoning commercial teen magazines of its era. Origins and Political Alignment Founded in 1951 by the German entrepreneur and publisher Herbert Fleissner , Jung und Frei was based in Stuttgart. From its inception, the magazine was closely aligned with the German Party (DP – Deutsche Partei) , a conservative, national-liberal party with strong regional roots in Lower Saxony. Under Fleissner’s leadership, the magazine served as an unofficial youth organ for the broader national-conservative and anti-communist right.
