The aesthetic shift is jarring. Gone are the steam tunnels and industrial catwalks. In their place are crumbling concrete, open sewers, and a courtyard where fights to the death settle disputes. Plus, it gave us —one of the most shocking death scenes in the show’s run—and finally allowed Mahone (William Fichtner) to transform from a villain into a tragic, broken ally.
