She remembered. Her father, still with them then, had built her a diamond kite from newspaper and twine. They’d run across the school field until it caught the wind, a living, tugging thing. She’d felt, for one pure minute, that she could lift off the ground. The chart, she realized, wasn't predicting the future. It was naming the past. The shape of it. The way she’d stopped talking
